The Ayacucho tapestry was initially woven primarily in Santa Ana, a suburb of the city of Ayacucho. There are three grades this tapestry: Street Quality (made of virgin wool and natural dyes); Special Quality(made of pre-washed wool and aniline dyes); and Signed (woven and signed by the masters). Many of the traditional designs are geometric in nature, taken from stone temple carvings and Codices (talking picture books of the ancient Incas, Mayans, and Aztecs).
